This year, we want you to make scalp massages a part of your day-to-day life, and no, we’re not talking weekly trips to the salon or booking pricey treatments, there’s a much easier and more affordable way. Enter the Scalp Exfoliator and Massager

What is a scalp massage brush?

A scalp massage brush is a handy little tool that you’re not going to be able to get enough of once you get your hands on it! A small handheld brush with bristles (or teeth in our case), scalp brushes are designed to remove dead skin cells and build-up from your scalp, while reviving and refreshing the skin on your head. We love our Scalp Exfoliator & Massager because not only does it feature our unique teeth, its winged design means it’s easier and more comfortable to hold and use, especially if you’re using it in the shower. It’ll slip easily into your hair care routine, but not out of your hands!

What are the benefits of using a scalp massager?

Yes, using a scalp massager feels incredible, but what if we told you that wasn’t even the best thing about it? There are so many amazing benefits to using a scalp massager, and here are some of our faves…

Exfoliation of dead skin

We all know how important exfoliating is for healthy, glowing skin and it's just as important for the skin on your head. Exfoliating your scalp buffs away any dead skin cells, leaving your hair follicles to breathe and do what they’re meant to do - grow beautiful healthy hair!

Increases blood circulation to the scalp

Your blood supplies life to each and every organ in your body, so if you want healthy hair, it’s important to increase your blood circulation to the scalp. Delivering oxygen and nutrients to your hair, increasing your blood circulation will help with hair growth, as well as the maintenance of your hair follicles. If you have low blood flow reaching your hair follicles, they will eventually shut down and remain dormant, but an active blood flow allows them to thrive, resulting in a healthy head of hair. Your hair follicles are the only ‘alive’ parts of your hair strands, and a scalp massage will keep them that way.

Removes build up and dandruff

Similarly to dead skin cells, products like shampoo, conditioner, dry shampoo or any styling products can build up on the scalp, suffocating your hair follicles. Scrubbing these away will allow your scalp to become the clean environment your hair needs for optimum health. If you suffer from dandruff, a scalp massage can also help. Not only does it help loosen up any dandruff, ready to wash away, it can also help your dandruff shampoo be more effective. A nicely exfoliated scalp will allow any products to properly penetrate the scalp and work their magic, as well as leaving you with a more thorough clean. To make this even more effective, work the shampoo into your scalp with the scalp massage and enjoy those good vibes.

Relaxation

Throughout the day we hold a lot of tension in our bodies, experience stress and don’t properly switch off, but treating yourself to a scalp massage will give you that little bit of calm that you’re craving. Reducing tension, circulating our blood flow and giving us a reason to focus on nothing but ourselves, taking the time out can almost feel meditative. And breathe…

Promotes hair growth

The key to growing healthy hair is a top notch scalp. Regularly using a scalp brush will keep your scalp in the best possible condition, meaning luscious locks. Giving our follicles a clean, stress-free environment with plenty of blood flow will allow the hair to flourish. Rapunzel, who?

There are a few different ways to use a scalp massager, so you can pick the method that suits you and your hair care routine. The easier it is, the more likely you are to make the time for it!

In the shower

Our favourite time to treat ourselves to a little head massage is in the shower on hair wash day. Not only do you get all the mentioned benefits, you’ll loosen up dead skin cells and build up ready to be washed away as you rinse.

1. Wet your hair and apply your chosen shampoo

2. Work your scalp brush around your head in small, circular movements

3. Apply as little or as much pressure as you like

4. Continue to massage as you rinse out your product to make sure you’re really cleaning up your scalp

5. Condition and complete the rest of your routine as usual

With hair oils

A scalp massage, plus hair oil? Heaven. Not only can hair oils strengthen and soften your hair, prevent dandruff and add shine to your hair, they also make a scalp massage feel like even more of a luxurious treat.

1. Make yourself comfortable for maximum relaxation

2. Put a towel around your shoulders to catch any oil drips

3. Apply your chosen oil to your scalp

4. Gently massage the scalp in circular movements using your scalp brush, making sure you give attention to your whole head

5. Wash the oil out with shampoo and finish the rest of your hair care routine

Inverted method

If you’re wanting to potentially maximise hair growth, while indulging in your head massage, do it upside down. This will send extra blood flow to your hair follicles, making it even more effective at its job.

1. Flip your head upside down or hang it off the end of your bed

2. Gently massage your head in circular movements

3. Cover the entire surface of your head

4. After a few minutes, get up again. Don’t be upside down for too long as this can cause dizziness!

How long should I massage my scalp for?

It’s totally up to you! It’s always best to aim for what you feel is realistic for you and your hair care routine so you actually stick to it and reap all the benefits. We like to make a scalp massage a permanent step in our wash day routine so that we’re doing it at least once a week. We recommend massaging for between one and five minutes so you can properly get rid of that build up, increase that blood flow and take a nice amount of time out for yourself.

Conclusion

You should now know exactly what a scalp massager is, how to use it and why it should be a part of your hair care routine. When it feels so good while being so good to your hair, why wouldn’t you invest in a scalp brush? You won’t regret it, we promise.
