IT’S TIME THE BEAUTY BUSINESS DID THE WORK
For many years hair and makeup products have tended to exclude BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) - especially Black women. From the very beginning, Tangle Teezer’s products have been built to be inclusive and work for every hair type – This has been integral to Tangle Teezer as a brand.
As a haircare brand, we understand that we are part of an industry which has reinforced beauty standards that have excluded Black women. There are a number of reasons to feel hopeful that progress is being made, but when legislation is needed to prohibit race-based hair discrimination there is clearly more work to do, for everyone!
We recently commissioned research which revealed that one in three Black children (33%) don’t see anyone who looks like them in media and literature. And despite 85% of Black parents encouraging their kids to embrace natural hair styles, some children still dream of long, straight locks because of the characters they see in stories every day.
Advancing diversity in the beauty industry will make the world a more beautiful place - inside and out. We do not have all the answers, but we’re not prepared to be silent either.
We are committed to working with minority-led businesses and creators in our marketing and to rooting out bias and being more inclusive internally.
We have signed up to the Halo Code - pledging that anyone who works with Tangle Teezer will have the freedom and security to wear all afro-hairstyles without judgment.
We are working with 60% BIPOC talent in all future influencer activity.
We will continue working towards greater representation and diversity, from the way we recruit to the way we deliver for our customers.
We recognise there is more work to be done and we intend to do it.
