Afro Hair Heroes
This month our super star Thick & Curly detangling hairbrush has been treated to some new summer colours. From Salsa Red (cue dancing lady emoji) to two summery colourways exclusive to Tangleteezer.com, we’ve got every reason to celebrate girls with thick, curly and fabulous hair. As an ode to big, beautiful curls, here are our top 5 afro hair heroes.
The original big hair diva, Diana Ross has championed her curls for decades, becoming renowned for hair as big as her voice. The Seventies is when she really emerged with these epic curls, after the straighter, sleeker styles of the Sixties, and they’ve just got bigger and better ever since.
Bursting onto MTV in the late ‘90s with her rainbow locks, Kelis’s afro was certainly the wildest and most colourful on our screens. From blonde tinted with pretty pink, red and coral hues to blue and green too, Kelis never shied away from making her afro bold, bright and beautiful.
Only occasionally do you see Erykah Badu’s incredible afro under wraps, but when it's let loose, it’s really, really big and there’s absolutely no missing it. We love Erykah’s bigger the better approach to her ‘fro and can’t get enough of it.
Beyonce’s little sister has always had a strong sense of style, and although she’s really experimental with her hair, we love it when Solange wears her hair in an afro. A style she often returns to, it varies from a soft cloud of longer hair, to shorter, tighter curls. Either way, it always looks picture perfect.
Another songstress with a fabulous afro, Lauryn Hill was very much championing natural hair during a time (circa 2000s) when bling was the look and au naturale was not. Although we’ll always love her trademark dreadlocks, Lauryn is an afro hair icon for us too.
And here are a few of the afro hair Instagram girls you should give a follow for serious big hair inspo.
