What’s your background in hairdressing?
I trained exclusively in hair colour. It’s a process I’m passionate about and my 30 years experience as a colour technician has seen me work in the best high profile salons in London, New York and Los Angeles – the blondest city of earth!
What does ‘high performance’ hair mean to you?
Beautiful hair. And for the wow factor you need to be completely committed to getting the best from your hair and you need 100 percent commitment from your hairdresser. Together this is the perfect formula for beautiful hair from colour to cut to finish.
What are the key hair crimes women commit?
Imitating! Copying a colour or style that doesn’t suit you is a one way road to disaster and disappointment. I always say let the true you shine through. Reduce the risk of bad hair experiences by identifying your hairdresser’s skill level and expertise as well as being honest with yourself. Assess how much time and money you are prepared to put in. Be warned: the unexpected turns into bad hair, unkempt roots and terrible styling.
What inspired you to invent Tangle Teezer?
Working with colour, the condition of the hair has always been my number one priority. When I saw women tearing out their hair with brushing that ended up in breakage and poor finish, I knew the answer lied somewhere with a hair tool. Drawing on decades of experience working with hair and my four years involved in research and development the end result was Tangle Teezer.
You initially showcased Tangle Teezer on Dragons’ Den.
How did you feel when you were rejected?
Although I never got the investment I went for, it was a valuable experience and gave Tangle Teezer brilliant exposure. I enjoyed the whole process very much – although I may not have looked like it! And ever the optimist I turned it to my advantage as it made me even more determined to make my idea a success. Following my story two years later on the spin-off show Dragons’ Den: On Tour my invention was hailed as ‘the one that got away’.
Since the show Tangle Teezer has become a hair phenomenon
